The tents are located right at the edge of the forest, and each spot has everything you need – a table, a fire ring, and a view that is better than any television picture. There is no electricity or Wi-Fi, but that is what makes a holiday here so authentic. This campground operates on a first-come, first-serve basis – reservations are not accepted. How the campsite works

Shupac Lake State Forest Campground is small, with only about thirty pitches. Everything here works on a simple principle: first come, first served. There is no need to book in advance, which adds a touch of spontaneity and a real sense of adventure to your holiday.

The tent sites are thoughtfully located: some are right by the water, where you can listen to the waves lapping in the morning and watch the fog rise over the lake; others are tucked away a little further, among the pine trees, where there is more shade and privacy. The infrastructure is minimal, but everything you need is there. Water is supplied from a hand pump – clean and cold, as it should be in the northern forests. The sanitary facilities are simple, without running water, but are kept in good condition. Each site has a fire pit with a metal ring and a wooden table, where you can cook or just sit with a cup of coffee.

A sandy path leads from the campsite to the lake. Follow it down to the shore to launch a boat, swim or just sit by the water. Everything around you breathes silence and space. Here you can hear the wind rustling the treetops, and in the evenings the air is filled with the smell of pine needles and smoke from the campfires.

Water is available only from a hand pump; there is no electricity. Payment is made on site at the self-service cash register. Cell phone reception is poor, but Verizon and AT&T get some signal in places.

If you are visiting for the first time, arrive during the day to choose a spot with a view of the lake. The best spots are closer to the northern edge of the campsite: the sun sets directly opposite, and the evening light falls on the water particularly beautifully.

When is the best time to visit?

Shupac Lake State Forest Campground is open most of the year, but it is especially beautiful from May to October. In spring, the air is filled with the scent of damp earth and fresh pine needles – a time when the lake water is crystal clear and the forest is just waking up. In early summer, the temperature becomes comfortable for swimming and sleeping under the open sky, and in the evenings you can watch long sunsets that paint the sky above the lake in shades of pink and amber.
